Giant Steps Melbourne
Due to overwhelming demand for a specialist school for children with autism (ASD) in Victoria, Giant Steps Melbourne opened in Kew in January 2016 to a cohort of 11 children.
With the opening of the Melbourne campus, Giant Steps is responding to the growing demand for our unique services.
Our trans-disciplinary team supports students across Foundation to Year 10.
Our team of teachers and therapists (Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Music Therapy) draw on their expertise to provide an innovative and individualised education and therapy program for each student. These programs are based on the Victorian Curriculum and incorporate all of the key learning areas.
Each member of our trans-disciplinary team play an integral part in the design, implementation and the assessment of the programs. This collaborative approach allows us to deliver rich learning programs within a supportive teaching environment. These programs aim to support student engagement and develop their skills. Our collaborative approach also allows us to differentiate the program to best support the individual social, physical and emotional needs of each student.
Working closely with the families is also fundamental to the Giant Steps model. It ensures we tailor the program to address the priorities of the family, work together as we support the students in their different contexts and respond to the changing needs of the students as they arise.
Giant Steps seeks to support the wider community’s understanding of the complex nature of autism and to promote opportunities of inclusiveness for our students and their families.
With the opening of the Melbourne campus, Giant Steps is responding to the growing demand for our unique services as well as creating a national profile within the schooling and disability sectors.
